NCD takes multiple factors into consideration when assessing the sustainability of a particular material or product, before engaging in development or promoting it to our customers.

These factors include:

MATERIAL INPUTS

We prioritize material ingredients that are renewable and sustainably sourced, such as sugarcane (bagasse), paper, bamboo (BBM) and corn (PLA) and other bio-based waste byproducts from other industries.

MANUFACTURING PROCESSES

Our production lines seek opportunities for reducing water usage and carbon emissions, and make efforts toward these aims whenever possible.

WASTE MANAGEMENT STREAMS

Wherever possible, we aim to create compostable products. We see this as the truest form of circularity, where the materials in their entirety can return to nature and/or be used as something new, to grow food or other important plant products.

In some cases, because of product usage requirement or regional regulations, we aren’t able to provide a compostable version of a product that will meet a customer’s unique needs. In these cases, we ensure that the options we provide are at a minimum recyclable. We also strive to maximize the compostable and renewable content within the piece, to reduce its overall environmental damage regardless of its disposal. This provides peace of mind, knowing that even if our products end up in general waste, recycling systems, oceans, or backyards, they will leave minimal trace in the environment.

TRANSPORTATION

We ensure we minimize transportation-related carbon emissions by sourcing raw materials that are close in proximity to our factories, and providing lightweight products wherever feasible.

VERIFICATION

We ensure that third parties verify the sustainability of our products by obtaining third party certifications at every opportunity (for example, see our BPI certified products list here). We also go above and beyond the third party testing by conducting our own testing for many of our compostable products, to get an accurate picture of how they will break down and in what time frame (please see images/videos below.)
