Polylactic Acid or PLA is a bio-sourced plastic derived from renewable resources like cornstarch or sugar cane. Polylactic Acid is carbon-neutral, edible, biodegradable, and has characteristics similar to polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), or polystyrene (PS).

  • PLA production uses 65% less energy than producing traditional plastics and creates 68% fewer greenhouse gases. 
  • Expected to biodegrade within 6-12 months.
  • Biodegradable under industrial composting conditions, starting with the chemical hydrolysis process, followed by microbial digestion, to ultimately degrade the PLA.
  • Can be incinerated, leaving no residue and producing 19.5 MJ/kg (8,368 btu/lb) of energy.
  • The least preferable option is landfilling because PLA degrades very slowly in ambient temperatures.
